Volkswagen Polo 6R buying guide
2009 to 2017. A 6R Polo suits a buyer who wants a solid, refined small car; a manual is the safer used buy.
Big jobs
- DSG 7 speed dry clutch gearbox. Low speed shudder is an early warning, and even after clutch packs are replaced the gearbox can lose drive or spike the revs. Mechatronic solenoids and a cracked valve body accumulator are blamed, and some selector forks lost reverse or sixth.
- Limp home mode. Reports of cars dropping into limp home mode with little warning are a real concern.
Workshop jobs
- Oil consumption. VW petrol engines of this era use oil faster than similar designs.
- Dampers and bushes. Poor handling is usually from cheap tyres, wrong pressures and worn dampers or bushes.
Small jobs
- Cabin plastics. Cabin plastics crack and fade with constant heat.
- Recalls. Volkswagen has had a long list of safety recalls, which has hurt Polo resale values.
Questions for the seller
- Is it manual or DSG, and has the DSG had any clutch or mechatronic work?
- Has it ever gone into limp mode?
- How much oil does it use?
- Have all recalls been done?
