Toyota RAV4 XA30 buying guide
2006 to 2012. An XA30 suits a buyer who wants a practical, easy to own SUV and checks the oil use and steering before buying.
Big jobs
- 2AZ-FE oil consumption. High oil use is reported on the 2.4 four cylinder, mainly on 2006 to 2008 cars, and Toyota in the US extended cover for it. The 3.5 V6 has reports too.
- 2.4 head bolt threads. Stripped head bolt threads in the block are reported on the 2.4 and the repair is described as quite expensive.
- 2.2 diesel head gasket. Head gaskets can fail on the 2.2 diesel, which UK reviewers rate less reliable than the petrol engines.
Workshop jobs
- Intermediate steering shaft. A worn intermediate steering shaft is a well known cause of clunking when turning, and some cars have needed a whole steering rack.
- Water pump. Water pump leaks are reported, mainly on 2006 to 2008 cars.
Small jobs
- Ignition coils. Failed ignition coils cause misfires and a shaking engine.
- Recalls. Recalls covered the throttle pedal on cars built February 2009 to January 2010, a rear suspension arm on cars built before August 2010 and the window switch on cars built September 2006 to December 2008.
- Evaporative emissions canister. A check engine light from the evaporative emissions system often traces to the charcoal canister.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: 2.4 petrol, 3.5 V6 or 2.2 diesel?
- How much oil does it use between services?
- Has the steering shaft or rack been replaced?
- Have the throttle pedal, rear suspension arm and window switch recalls been done?
- Has the water pump been replaced?
