Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ (second generation) buying guide
2021 to now. A GR86 or second generation BRZ suits a driver who wants a light rear drive coupe and will keep the oil fresh, with extra care if it goes on track.
Big jobs
- Oil starvation on track. A small number of engine failures are reported on cars used hard on track with long right hand bends, traced to oil starvation at the sump pickup. Owners fit an accumulator, sump baffles or a bigger sump.
- Oil condition and bearings. Spun bearings are linked to thinned or overheated oil on hard used cars.
Small jobs
- Emergency call module recall. A recall at the end of 2022 covered a data module that might not trigger the automatic emergency call after a severe crash or from the roof SOS button.
- Tail light recall. A tail light recall in August 2023 affected a small number of cars.
- Rattles and road noise. Road noise is high and occasional rattles come from round the overhead console.
Questions for the seller
- Has the car been used on track, and does it have any oil system changes?
- How often has the oil been changed, and with what grade?
- Have all recalls been completed?
- Is it NZ new or an import?
