Range Rover Sport L320 buying guide
2005 to 2013. An L320 suits a buyer who wants a sporty, capable SUV and will check the belt history and the air suspension.
Big jobs
- 2.7 TDV6 timing belt. The 2.7 TDV6 needs its timing belt and pulleys replaced at 7 years or 105,000 miles, and a belt that lets go can ruin the engine.
- Air springs, height sensors and body control module. Early air springs leak with age, so the car sits low and will not lift when Terrain Response is turned. A failed sensor can seize the suspension in one position, and the body control module has been known to fail.
- Gearbox park engagement and recalls. The automatic can fail to engage Park even with the lever in place, so check Park and the handbrake both hold. Recalls covered a fuel pump bearing leak, the brake booster, wheel balance weights rubbing wires and a front seatbelt buckle.
Workshop jobs
- Supercharged and petrol V8 water pump. Pistonheads suggests replacing the electric water pump on the petrol V8s as a precaution unless it has been done recently. Failure shows as an EMS warning on the dash.
- Suspension bushes and ball joints. Bushes wear quickly because of the weight, and ball joints and tie rods can be very expensive to replace. Larger non standard wheels speed up the wear.
Small jobs
- Door handles, parking sensors and spare wheel cradle. Door handles can fail when an electric motor jams the lock, parking sensors give false warnings in the wet, and the spare wheel cradle under the boot can be damaged off road.
- Battery and cabin electrics. Expect to fit a new battery every couple of years. Heated seats can fail from broken connections and the central locking can fail.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: 2.7 or 3.0 TDV6, TDV8, or a petrol V8?
- On the 2.7 diesel, when was the timing belt done?
- On a petrol V8, has the water pump been replaced?
- Has the air suspension been repaired?
- Have the recalls been done?
