Range Rover L405 buying guide
2012 to 2021. An L405 suits a buyer who wants the most luxurious 4WD of its time and will budget for air suspension and electrics.
Big jobs
- Air suspension and arm bushes. Faulty compressors and blown air springs are known issues, and a knock usually means worn front track control arms and rear lower arms, about 700 pounds for the lot in the UK.
Workshop jobs
- Turbo breather oil leaks (4.4 V8 diesel). Oil leaks round the turbos come from the breather, and a modified breather pipe can cost up to 850 pounds in the UK.
- EGR valves and exhaust fumes. EGR valves are a common problem, and one owner reported exhaust fumes in the cabin with the air conditioning in auto.
- Electrics and body fit (mainly pre 2015). Most problems were electrical or body fit, mostly on pre 2015 cars. Rear doors, tailgate and bonnet fit has been an issue, seals can be poorly fitted and the bonnet can show not closed on a slope.
- Theft risk on early cars. Early cars were very vulnerable to theft, and a retrofit fix was introduced after 2015.
- Off road damage and 22 inch wheels. Check the underside for off road damage. The 22 inch wheels are more prone to buckling on potholes.
Small jobs
- Fuel tank sensors, shifter and interior buttons. Fuel tank sensors can fail, the rotary gear selector sometimes does not pop up, and stop start and steering wheel buttons degrade on older cars.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: TDV6, SDV6, SDV8 or a petrol V8?
- Has the turbo breather or EGR work been done on the diesel?
- Has the security retrofit been fitted?
- When were the transfer box and diff oils last changed?
- Has the air suspension been repaired?
