Range Rover L322 buying guide
2002 to 2012. An L322 suits a buyer who wants a luxury 4WD with real off road ability and has money set aside for air suspension and gearbox work.
Big jobs
- Air suspension compressor and leaks. The air compressor is the most likely culprit when the suspension misbehaves, and water getting in can cause faults. Many owners replace it every 4 years as a service item.
- Automatic gearbox (BMW V8 and diesels). The GM and ZF 5 speed autos on the early BMW V8 are prone to complete failure, often near 60,000 miles despite being sealed for life. On the TDV8 3.6 check for abrupt shifts and a clean reverse, and gearbox trouble carries on with the 8 speed on the 4.4 TDV8.
- TD6 turbo. Failed turbos are common on the BMW 3.0 TD6 diesel, at about 2,500 pounds in the UK.
- Transfer box. A clunky change or a reluctance to go into low range points to transfer box trouble, which one owner was quoted 2,000 pounds to replace.
Workshop jobs
- Front propshaft coupling. Loss of front drive is usually the propshaft flexible coupling wearing out, so the front axle gets no drive. Many were replaced under warranty or goodwill.
- Rear hub bushes and ball joints. Worn rear hub bushes clonk over bumps, and ball joints wear front and rear. Wheels over 20 inches speed up suspension wear.
- LPG conversions and exhaust. Many petrol cars have been converted to LPG, so ask for the installation certificate and receipts. A worn exhaust is expensive to replace.
Small jobs
- Split intercooler hose. A split intercooler hose is not uncommon and shows as a sudden power loss at higher speeds as the car goes into limp mode. The fix is cheap and easy.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: TD6, TDV8 3.6 or 4.4, or a petrol V8?
- Has the gearbox fluid ever been changed, or the gearbox replaced?
- When was the air suspension compressor last replaced?
- Has the front propshaft coupling been replaced?
- Has it been converted to LPG, and is there a certificate?
