Nissan X-Trail T31 buying guide
2007 to 2013. A T31 suits a family that wants a practical, boxy SUV and checks the CVT or clutch before buying.
Big jobs
- CVT (petrol). Early T31 CVTs were replaced because an overloaded bearing failed.
- 2.0 diesel turbo. Turbos can fail on the diesel, with more risk over 150,000 km.
- Diesel particulate filter. Several diesels have had DPF failures, which are expensive to fix.
Workshop jobs
- Clutch (manuals). Premature clutch failures are reported on petrol and diesel manuals, worse with towing.
- Rust and underbody damage. Rust should not be showing on a T31, but off road use scuffs the floor pans and sills and lets corrosion in, and damages joints, boots and the exhaust.
Small jobs
- Power seats (leather models). On leather trimmed models the power seat adjusters should be checked.
Questions for the seller
- Is it the 2.0 or 2.5 petrol or the 2.0 diesel, and manual or CVT?
- When was the CVT fluid last changed?
- Has the clutch been replaced?
- Has it towed or been off road?
