Nissan Skyline R34 GT-T buying guide
1998 to 2002. An R34 GT-T suits a buyer who wants the R34 look and a turbo straight six without GT-R running costs.
Big jobs
- Overheating history. An overheating history is called a major red flag, and cars with coolant or oil leaks are best avoided.
- Ceramic turbine wheel. The standard turbo has a ceramic turbine wheel that dislikes high sustained exhaust temperatures.
- Rust on imported cars. Cars from coastal or snowy regions may show corrosion.
Workshop jobs
- Coils, plugs and airflow meter. Age related misfires from heat cycles are reported on the RB25DET NEO, and unmetered air past the airflow meter also upsets it.
- HICAS and rear bushes. Worn rear steer or subframe bushes give vague handling. HICAS is electrically activated and some owners deactivate it.
- Headlights. Tarnished reflectors and cloudy covers are common and costly to replace.
Small jobs
- Front air dam and electric windows. Cracks and kerb strikes on the lower edges of the air dam are common, and the electric windows can bind.
Questions for the seller
- When were the timing belt and water pump last done, and at what km?
- Has the car ever overheated?
- Is the turbo the original ceramic unit, and what boost does it run?
- Is the HICAS working, or has it been deleted?
- Is it a 2 door coupe or 4 door, and manual or auto?
