Mercedes Benz ML W164 buying guide
2005 to 2011. A W164 ML suits a family that wants a comfortable, capable SUV and will budget for Mercedes parts prices.
Workshop jobs
- Electric tailgate. If the electric tailgate is not perfectly aligned the motors strain and can burn out, and repairs are costly.
Small jobs
- Engine shut down and power loss recalls. Recalls covered cars built up to October 2008 whose engine could shut down while driving, and a loss of engine power.
- Fuel leak and floor mat recalls. Recalls covered potential fuel leaks in 2011, an automatic tailgate opening fault in 2009, and floor mats that could catch the throttle.
- Squeaking front seats. The front seats can squeak and creak, even when nobody is in them, and permanent fixes can be hard to find.
- Bulb warning lights. If a replacement bulb is not seated properly the dash warning light stays on.
- Window trim and air suspension spec. The black lacquer trim round the side windows flakes and peels. Options lists were long, and Auto Express recommends air suspension for ride and handling.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: ML 280 or ML 320 CDI, ML 350, or ML 500?
- Have the recalls been done, including the engine shut down recall?
- Does it have air suspension?
- Has the electric tailgate ever been repaired?
- When was the gearbox oil last changed?
