Mercedes Benz G-Class W463A buying guide
2018 to now. A W463A suits a buyer who wants the modern G-Class and its presence, and who will check the recall history and budget for Mercedes running costs.
Workshop jobs
- Electrics and electronics. Auto Express says electrics and electronics are the most likely source of trouble, though fault patterns are hard to pin down because the truck is hand built and rare.
- Panel fit. Auto Express says to check panel fit on a hand built G-Class.
Small jobs
- Differential lock module (2018 and 2019 G 63). A recall covered 2018 and 2019 G 63s because sulphur fumes from the axle oil could damage an electrical part in the diff locking module. The diff lock display could be wrong and ESP and ABS could switch off.
- Front axle wiring harness (2018 to 2022 G 63 and G 400d). A recall covered G 63 and G 400d trucks built 2018 to 2022 because the front axle wiring harness can rub against the oil cooler, which can disable ABS and ESP.
- Drivetrain recalls. Auto Express lists recalls for a transmission casing issue, faulty rear axle casings and faulty automatic transmissions.
- Fuel, coolant and wiring recalls. Recalls have covered coolant and fuel leaks, chafing wiring, faulty fuel pumps, wiring harnesses, seatbelt buckles and the eCall system.
Questions for the seller
- Is it a G 63, a G 500 or G 550, or a G 400d diesel?
- Have all recalls been done, including the diff lock and front axle wiring recalls?
- Is there a full Mercedes service history, including the rear axle oil?
- Has it had any electrical faults or warning lights?
- Has it been used off road or for towing?
