Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet C207 buying guide
2009 to 2017. A C207 suits a buyer who wants a comfortable four seat coupe or cabriolet and will check the engine history for its type.
Big jobs
- M271 camshaft adjuster (E 250 CGI). On the E 250 CGI the cast iron cam adjuster wears against the timing chain, giving a start up rattle, rough idle and timing fault codes. Severe cases can let pistons hit valves. Post 2012 M271 EVO engines are not expected to have it.
- OM651 diesel injectors and timing chain (E 250 CDI). The Delphi piezo injectors failed at a high rate beyond about 50,000 km and were replaced with solenoid injectors, used from the factory from about mid 2012. The timing chain and tensioner wear at higher km, and the chain is at the gearbox end so replacing it is expensive.
Workshop jobs
- V6 and V8 variable intake manifold (2009 to 2011 E 350 and E 500). On the M272 V6 and M273 V8 the plastic actuator for the intake flaps can break as carbon builds up, giving a rough idle, lost power and codes such as P2004 and P2187. Mercedes replaces the whole manifold.
- M276 and M278 start up rattle. A rattle for several seconds after start up on the E 350, E 400 and E 500 comes from low oil pressure in the secondary chain tensioners. A Mercedes bulletin replaces both tensioners and adds check valves.
- Front seat slide, electrics and wheels. What Car says to test all the interior electrics and the front seat electric slide, without which rear passengers cannot get in, and to look for kerbed wheels and uneven panel gaps.
Small jobs
- Power steering and diesel fuel leaks. Recalls covered power steering fluid leaking at the pump line on 2009 and 2010 cars, diesel leaking from the fuel filter on OM651 cars, and oil leaking from the timing chain tensioner seal on OM651 cars sold in 2014.
- Takata and driver airbag recalls. Cars sold May 2009 to September 2011 were recalled for Takata airbag inflators, and later cars for a driver airbag that could deploy from an electrostatic discharge.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: E 250 CGI, E 350, E 400, E 500 or a diesel?
- On an E 250 CGI, has the cam adjuster been replaced?
- On a diesel, have the injectors been changed to the solenoid type?
- Have all the airbag and power steering recalls been done?
- If it is a cabriolet, does the roof work properly?
