Mazda RX-8 buying guide
2003 to 2012. An RX-8 suits an enthusiast who wants a rotary and accepts frequent oil checks and specialist care.
Big jobs
- Rotor tip wear and compression. Rotor tips must be kept lubricated, and a compression test by a rotary specialist shows whether the engine is worn. Equal compression on both rotors is a good sign.
- Cold start flooding. Switching off before the engine is warm can flood it and make it hard to restart. Fuel dumped into the catalytic converter shortens its life.
Workshop jobs
- Coil packs and plugs. The coil packs must be replaced about every 30,000 miles. Weak ones cause poor hot starting and lost power.
- Secondary shutter valve. A broken secondary shutter valve in the inlet manifold causes a lack of power and a ticking noise.
- Front oil pipes, radiators and sump rust. The front oil pipes can rust from water coming through the wheel arch liners, and the oil cooler and air conditioning radiators in the front bumper rust. Mazda issued new pipes and liners.
- Clutch and heat shield. Clutches typically need replacing about every 30,000 miles, and the dynamic damper heat insulator can crack or fall off; a recall replaced faulty ones.
Small jobs
- Oil use. The engine uses oil by design, so the oil level needs regular checks.
Questions for the seller
- Has a rotary compression test been done recently, and can I see it?
- When were the coil packs and plugs last done?
- Has it ever flooded or failed to restart?
- Has the front oil pipe campaign or the heat shield recall been done?
- What oil do you use and how often do you top it up?
