Ford Ranger Raptor PX3 buying guide
2018 to 2022. A PX3 Raptor suits a buyer who wants a fast off road ute and will check the suspension, underbody and gearbox history.
Big jobs
- 10 speed automatic. Expect to change the fluid regularly despite Ford claims; thumping between gears can point to neglect or overheating. A recall covered the transmission fluid pump on 2.0 bi turbo 10 speed Rangers sold December 2017 to October 2019.
- Belt in oil timing system. The 2.0 bi turbo uses a belt running in oil meant to last the engine life, but many specialists suggest inspecting or replacing it at about 150,000 km.
- Fox shocks and suspension bushes. Leaking or soft shocks, uneven damping and bush play point to heavy off road use, and bespoke Fox shocks and control arms are expensive.
- Underbody and chassis damage. Check the underbody for scrapes, bent skid plates and cracked mounts, and for signs of chassis straightening or weld repairs.
Workshop jobs
- Turbo, EGR and aftermarket wiring. There are scattered reports of turbo, EGR and wiring issues on hard used trucks, and badly fitted auxiliary lights or winch wiring cause electrical faults.
- Drive modes and rear diff lock. All drive modes and the rear diff lock should engage, and some PX3 owners report the transmission popping back into 2WD.
Questions for the seller
- Has the 10 speed fluid been changed, and was it in the pump recall?
- Has the timing belt been inspected?
- Has it been used hard off road or jumped?
- Is there a full dealer or specialist service history?
- Is any factory warranty left?
