BMW X5 F15 buying guide
2013 to 2018. An F15 X5 suits a family that wants a big, well built SUV and will choose the engine carefully and check the fluids.
Big jobs
- 2.0 diesel timing chain (25d). On the 2.0 diesel 25d a rattle on start up and metallic chatter at idle usually mean worn chain guides or a stretched chain, a four figure bill. Specialists suggest replacement at 80,000 to 100,000 miles.
- ZF 8 speed automatic. Some dealers call it sealed for life, but ZF recommends oil changes at 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Shudder, grabby take off, jolting shifts and poor response are warning signs.
- N63 V8 coolant transfer pipe (50i and X5 M). The V8 coolant transfer pipe leaks where it joins the water pump and rear outlet, and overheating is a risk.
- 3.0 diesel EGR cooler and swirl flaps. A leaking EGR cooler causes slow coolant loss and can cause serious damage, and swirl flaps can clog with carbon or wear at the pivots.
- Diesel high pressure fuel pump, DPF and AdBlue. A failed high pressure pump spreads debris through the fuel system, the DPF suffers on short trips, and the AdBlue level and NOx sensors need checking.
Workshop jobs
- Tailgate, third row and accident repairs. Both tailgate halves should open, close and lock smoothly; chatter can mean misaligned panels after a repair. Adaptive headlights replaced with standard units and coded out point to accident damage.
Questions for the seller
- Which engine is it: 25d, 30d, 40d, M50d, 35i, 50i or the 40e plug in hybrid?
- Has the gearbox oil been changed?
- On a 25d, has the timing chain been replaced?
- On a V8, has the coolant transfer pipe been replaced?
- Was it serviced at regular intervals, or stretched to the maximum?
