BMW M4 F82 buying guide
2014 to 2020. An F82 M4 suits a keen driver who wants a fast coupe and will check the crank hub status and history first.
Big jobs
- S55 crank hub. The crank gear is held by a friction washer with no keyway, so the hub can slip, throwing out the timing and setting a drivetrain warning. A spun hub can kill the engine. Failures are a small percentage and are thought more common on DCT and tuned cars.
- Turbo oil seals. Turbo oil seal failure is reported more often at higher mileage, around 40,000 miles.
- Modified and hard driven cars. These cars are often driven hard, so cars.co.za suggests avoiding modified examples and checking the service history closely.
Workshop jobs
- Oil leaks and PCV valve. Oil can leak from the rocker cover, oil filter housing and sump. A stuck or clogged PCV valve in the valve cover builds crankcase pressure and can cause leaks.
Small jobs
- Early car handling and spec. Early cars had a reputation for wayward handling. Competition Package cars from 2016 have a revised diff and suspension, and adaptive dampers are worth seeking out.
Questions for the seller
- Has a crank hub kit been fitted?
- Is it DCT or manual, and is it a Competition Package car?
- Has it been tuned or tracked?
- Is there a full service history?
