BMW M3 E46 buying guide
2000 to 2006. An E46 M3 suits a buyer who wants a high revving straight six coupe and budgets for the subframe and bearings.
Big jobs
- Rear axle carrier cracking. Cracking of the rear axle carrier panel is called the E46 M3 weak point. Reinforcement plates are fitted as a fix or to prevent it.
- S54 rod bearings. Rod bearing weakness should have been cured on an early recall, and specialists recommend replacing them preventatively.
- VANOS. A rattling VANOS or a lack of power means an overhaul is due.
- Head gasket. Head gasket failure is fairly common at 80,000 to 100,000 miles. A misfire, or pinking when accelerating gently uphill at 2000 rpm, are signs.
- SMG gearbox pump. Slow gear changes or an apparent loss of 4th gear point to the SMG pump.
Workshop jobs
- Lower wishbones and bushes. The forged aluminium lower wishbones and their bushes and bearings lead a hard life.
- Rust and damp electrics. Rust mainly shows on the arches. Damp causes electrical faults, especially on cars kept outside, and convertible hoods let water in.
Questions for the seller
- Has the rear axle carrier been checked or reinforced?
- Have the rod bearings been replaced, and was the recall done?
- Is it manual or SMG?
- Has it been tracked or modified?
- Has the head gasket been done?
