Audi Q7 4L buying guide
2006 to 2015. A 4L Q7 suits a family that wants a big seven seat SUV cheaply and will check the air suspension and timing chain.
Big jobs
- 3.0 TDI timing chain tensioner. A rattle on start up on the 3.0 TDI points to the timing chain tensioner. A software update comes first; if the noise stays, the tensioner is replaced.
- Air suspension. Water in the compressor dryer causes self levelling failure, a warning light and headlights pointing skywards.
Workshop jobs
- Centre propshaft bearing. A whine from underneath at about 30 to 40 mph, worse in cold weather, points to the centre propshaft bearing.
- Inlet manifold flaps and thermostat. Inlet manifold flaps and their actuators set the engine light, and a failed thermostat makes the car feel slow and can run it hot.
- Fast front tyre wear. Front tyres can wear out in under 7,000 miles, outer edges first, and the cause is not clear.
Small jobs
- Recalls and underside damage. Recalls covered a power tailgate that could close unexpectedly, leaking fuel rails and oil reaching the brake servo. Check the underside for off road damage.
Questions for the seller
- Is it the 3.0 TDI, 4.2 TDI, 3.6 or 4.2 petrol?
- Has the 3.0 TDI timing chain tensioner been done?
- Has the air suspension been repaired?
- Have all recalls been done?
