Known weak points
Curated by Redline from owner club and specialist sources Commonly reported by owners and specialists for the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series (1998 to 2007). Not every car has these; check this one.
Front differential
The front diff is called a weak link through the whole 100 Series run, in both the solid axle 105 and IFS models. Failures were common off road.
- Where to look
- The front diff housing under the front of the truck, and its breather and drain plug
- How to test
- Listen for whine at steady speed and clunks when you take up drive in 4WD. Ask whether the front diff has been rebuilt or replaced.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- High cost diff rebuild with imported parts

IFS chassis cracking and lower control arms
Chassis cracking around the independent front suspension is reported, and a run of lower control arm failures led to reinforcing plates being sold as a retrofit.
- Where to look
- The chassis around the front suspension mounts and the lower control arms on IFS models
- How to test
- Look with a torch for cracks, fresh welds or reinforcing plates at the front suspension mounts and arms. Treat a lifted truck on mud tyres with a bullbar with more caution.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- High cost chassis welding or new control arms

Rear limited slip differential
The rear LSD fitted before 2002 is described as a weak point, and the 2002 update kept a weak rear LSD.
- Where to look
- The rear diff housing and the model year on the build plate
- How to test
- Listen for clunks and whine from the rear on the drive and look for oil weeping from the pinion seal.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- Medium cost LSD rebuild or a locker conversion

Driveline seals and backlash
Broken seals on driveline joints that let water in, and backlash in the driveline, are reported on used 100s.
- Where to look
- The CV boots, uni joints and front axle seals under the truck
- How to test
- Look for split boots and wet or rusty joints. On the drive feel for a clunk or slack when changing between drive and reverse.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- Medium cost boots are cheap; worn joints are more
Roof rack leaks and tailgate catches
Roof racks have caused rain leaks into the cabin, and the tailgate catches can seize with dust.
- Where to look
- The roof gutters and rack feet, the headlining, and the rear door and tailgate latches
- How to test
- Look for water stains on the headlining and rust round the rack feet. Open and close the rear doors and tailgate from inside and out.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- Low cost sealing and latch parts

LPG conversions on petrol engines
Toyota discouraged LPG conversions and valve seat recession is possible. Dual fuel engines also need valve clearances set more often.
- Where to look
- The LPG tank and plumbing, and the conversion and valve adjustment records
- How to test
- Ask for the installation and servicing records. Check it starts and idles smoothly on both fuels.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- High cost head work if the valve seats have receded

Underbody damage from off road use
Sandblasting, bashed underbody fittings and damaged fuel tanks and brackets point to hard off road use.
- Where to look
- The fuel tanks, suspension arms, brackets and exposed steel under the truck
- How to test
- Look underneath for dents, pitting and rust on sandblasted steel. Check the spare wheel carrier under the rear; early trucks used a cable that Toyota replaced with a chain.
- Cost if it needs fixing
- Medium cost depends on what is bent

What the cost bands mean
- Low: a small job. Typically a few hundred dollars or less at an NZ workshop, often a DIY fix.
- Medium: a proper workshop job. Typically several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.
- High: a major job. Typically several thousand dollars or more, enough to change what the car is worth.
Service items
- 1HZ diesel engine oil: every 5,000 km at most. The indirect injection diesel needs frequent changes. (carsales.com.au (opens in a new tab))
- Valve clearances on LPG petrol engines: more often than the standard schedule. Gas fuelled engines can suffer valve seat recession. (carsguide.com.au (opens in a new tab))
Questions to ask the seller
- Is it the IFS 100 or the solid front axle 105, and which engine does it have?
- Has the front diff ever been rebuilt or replaced?
- Has it been lifted, and is there an LVVTA certificate for the lift?
- Has it run on LPG, and are there valve adjustment records?
- Has the chassis at the front suspension ever been welded or plated?
New Zealand notes
- Both the IFS 100 and the solid axle 105 are on NZ roads. They differ at the front end, so confirm which one it is from the chassis code.
- Lifts over about 50 mm can cause certification trouble; more than simple changes need LVVTA certification.
A 100 suits a buyer who wants a comfortable long distance tow wagon and will check the front end and diffs before buying.
